I’m Manolis Nikolakakis. I work with photography, geographic information and web applications, often bringing them together within the same project. Panotours is where I present that work and write about the methods, decisions and experiments behind it.
Geotour Crete
My main ongoing project is Geotour Crete, which I began developing in May 2024. Its purpose is to document and help people understand Crete’s cultural heritage, history, people and natural environment.
I develop its connected applications, organize information and produce much of its photographic and panoramic material. The website, maps, photographic archive and virtual tour are parts of that wider work. Geotour is also a place for personal learning and experimentation.
Background
My early work included volunteering with organizations concerned with wildlife and environmental protection. In 1995 I began working with the Natural History Museum of Crete at the University of Crete, initially as a volunteer and later under contract, until early 2021. Website development and management became part of my work there.
From 2021 to 2024 I worked at the University’s Information and Communication Technologies Infrastructure and Services Center and subsequently its Public Relations Department, focusing on websites and the organization of photographic and video material.
I am self-taught in computing. My work has brought me into databases, cartography, photogrammetry, website development, image processing and virtual tours. Since 2014 I have also developed my photography, particularly landscapes and panoramas, adding drone photography from 2018.

Panotours began as a place to show photographs and experiment with presenting them online. It has changed as my work has developed. Today it brings together selected projects, the services I provide and articles about how I work.
A project may combine a website, a map, photographs, an archive and a virtual tour. I present these together so that the purpose and the connections remain clear.
